5  Tips for Planning a Memorable Winter Family Photoshoot

Winter isn’t the most popular month for family photo sessions because of the cold, but there are a number of other perks too.

For one, it’s not as busy so you can likely book your dream photographer more easily and even get a reduced rate in some instances.

Another perk is that the setting is truly unique, and your photos will stand out.

If you think that a winter family photoshoot sounds ideal, here are a few tips to help you make the most of it.

1.      Keep An Eye On the Weather. While snow makes for magical family photos, you never know when the weather might take a turn for the worse. It’s important to remember that you may need to reschedule your session. For this reason, it’s highly recommended that you pencil in two different dates with your photographer.

2.      Be Prepared to Have Some Fun. For your photographer to get some beautiful candid shots, be prepared to have a little fun in the snow. Think snow angels and snowball fights.

3.      Pick the Right Clothing. What you choose to wear to your shoot also matters. To make the most of your session, think beyond just pants and coats. Warm scarves, funky boots, and colorful mittens are all recommended.

4.      Speaking of Clothing. The all-white backdrop is perfect for adding pops of color, so don’t be shy. Pick colors and prints that pop but won’t completely distract from the people in the photos.

5.      Plan the Day. If you think your kids might not be too willing to get up a little earlier in the cold, take steps to make sure everyone is comfortable. Get a good night’s sleep, make sure that everyone is cozy in their clothing, and prepare some warm drinks and food for the morning. A flask of hot chocolate goes a long way. In fact, you can even turn items like this into props.

If you have any other concerns about shooting in the colder months, don’t be shy to ask your photographer for recommendations.  The possibilities are endless with a little planning and thoughtfulness put into the process of what will work best for you and yours.
