Simple Tips for Holiday Family Photos

Families, Photo Tips & Tricks

You know those photos – the ones that you can immediately pin to a specific decade – this is not what you should aim for when planning your family photo session.

If your family photos are something you want to display in your home and pass down to your grandchildren, make them true to you and timeless.

A photo is timeless when it’s not limited to a particular period, with true to you meaning it showcases the real awesomeness of you and yours for generations to come to admire.

Tip 1: Take Your Time with Your Outfits

When you think about dated photos, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Clothing is always one of the most significant factors. If you want timeless family photos, you need to steer clear of trends, including logos. You might think something looks good now, and it probably does, but it will likely look very dated 10 years from now.

For men, think a classic chino or jeans and button-up shirt. For women, a black or white dress or blouse will never go out of style.

The main rule to keep in mind is to keep your outfits simple, complimentary and neutral.

Tip 2: Pick the Right Location

The background of a photo is another aspect that can instantly indicate a specific time period, which is why you need to pick your shoot location carefully. If you’re leaning towards a cityscape as your location, keep in mind that architecture eventually becomes dated. Instead, you may want to consider an outdoor location or even your home.

Tip 3: Choose the Right Photographer

The final tip for creating timeless and classic family photos is to find the right professional for the job. Not all photographers have the kind of style you need to create these kinds of photos. Review each photographer’s portfolio carefully and ask them whether they can help you achieve what you have in mind. The equipment and editing processes a photographer uses will also determine whether they’re capable of achieving the look you want.
